Introduction
- This beautiful1940 Indian 741B Scout has been registered and
warranted since Dec 1993 when it was restored. It has since lapsed and sat
for the last 18months but has all documentation and clear title. It is a
very pretty, well proportioned Scout that has been customized with skirted
fenders to provide that 40's 'Sports Scout' or 'Baby Chief" look and how
it works!.
The rear skirt is cleverly mounted and can be taken on and off at will
(see
older photo
with skirts off). The front is a little more
permanent being tack brazed in several places but this can be removed
without damage to return it to the stock look (but why!?)
Motor & Running Gear - Claimed to have been bored to 600cc
capacity but we have nothing to support this except I have ridden it and
has higher compression and pulls much better than my stock 500cc so will
leave it at that. The motor is strong, does not leak or burn oil and
has a strong oil return indicating pump is in top shape. It does not
foul plugs or blow smoke and starts second kick cold and first kick hot
without fail.
It needs no obvious work and should give you many more carefree miles, it
does have a small manifold leak that can backfire (pop) under fast
de-acceleration but this is easily fixed should you wish. The engine cases
and primary alloys all appear undamaged, the heads and cylinders do have a
couple of chipped fins as is the norm, and these, while not noticeable can
be repaired too.

Carb, Dist. and
Electrics - It is the correct Linkert M741 which has been
reconditioned including new throttle shaft bushings etc. Bosch generator
was charging and all lighting work - hi/lo, stop and tail lamp and number
plate light. (this excludes the spotlights which are for show and not yet
wired). The front fender sports what I believe is a correct '46 chief
guide light. The battery has been sitting for some time and may be on its
last legs, it is a smaller 6volt unit inside a hard rubber case. So it can
be changed without affecting that period battery look.
All accessories, the correct ammeter and correct ignition switch work too.
The Speedo is an Indian script 110mph unit (Corbin?) which may be
reproduction but looks and works fine. The Distributor shaft bushing was
replaced as well as new points, leads, condenser and coil...
Primary and Gearbox - All good, overhauled when motor was
done in 1993. Primary chain is near end of adjustment but a new old
stock primary chain will be supplied with the bike for use later if
required. The clutch plates and discs have been slotted and drilled to
assist action. There are new rubbers on the brake and clutch pedals
as well as new footboards...
Wheels and Tires and Saddle - The original 18" rims and hubs
were powder coated gloss black and wheels rebuilt with new felts etc last
year. Brakes work a treat and both foot and handbrake pull the bike up
quickly and evenly without grabbing or locking. The front tire still has
plenty of miles left in it being about half worn, the rear is more worn
and may need replacement in the near future. The saddle is correct and
original, pan and springs, the yoke is repro cast bronze. It has been
rebuilt and covered with very heavy stock leather stitched as original and
correct down to the Indian logo embossed stamp. It is as new and very
comfortable. Additionally a pillion passenger seat is provided and is
bolted to the rear fender (holes exist). You
can see it in the
photo here
(but it doesn't show the leather damage to left hand corner which will
might need repair)...
Fuel tanks and Cosmetics - Tanks are very sound and do not
leak. As the photos will show, the paint is still in very good
condition but has been touched up here and there over the years. (Note:
some photos show the paint with a pinkish tinge, it is not pink!, more a
bright Chinese red). Also note there is a different decal on each side!.
The plating and general finish of all parts of this machine are also real
nice. All sheet metal, tanks, fenders, chain guard, dash panel and toolbox
are originals....
Summary - In terms of
originality, no, its not 100% correct, but close, deviations from stock
are oil and fuel lines, hi/lo switch, horn, air cleaner, side stand and
rear taillight.
But its a very honest bike, - a low mileage older restoration, well
maintained with a touch of class from the custom skirts and above all a
rider!. ...
It needs nothing but a new owner!. Keep it as is or return it
to stock, your choice.
Good luck in the bidding!!. Anything else you need to know
